TUMBUKA TRIBE AND THEIR TRADITIONAL DANCE IN MALAWI
Tumbuka tribe is one of the most dominant ethnic group in Malawi, with a rich cultural heritage that has been preserved for centuries. Among the various traditions and customs of the Tumbuka people, the Vimbuza dance holds a significant place as a spiritual and healing ritual. The Vimbuza dance is a traditional dance performed by the Tumbuka tribe as part of their spiritual and healing practices. It is performed by both men and women and is accompanied by drumming and chanting.
VIMBUZA THE HEALING DANCE
Vimbuza is the healing popular among the Tumbuka people living in the Northern Malawi such as Mzimba and Rumphi. In the Tumbuka culture, the Vimbuza dance is not just a form of entertainment or expression, but a sacred ritual that is deeply rooted in their beliefs. The Vimbuza dance is often performed during times of illness or distress, as it is believed to have to the individual and the community.
Tumbuka people believe that the Vimbuza dance serves as a medium through which spirits communicate with the living. The dance is performed to invoke the spirits of the ancestors and to seek their guidance and blessings. It is also believed that the rhythmic movements and chanting of the dance have the ability to channel positive energy and healing vibration to the person in need.
According to Tumbuka belief, illness and misfortune are often attributed to the presence of malevolent spirits or witchraft. Vimbuza dance is performed as a form of a exorcism to rid the affected individuals of these negative influences and well being. The dance is also considered a form of spiritual cleansing for the community as it is believed to dispel negative energies and restore harmony and peace. Vimbuza dance is led by a healer or spiritual leader known as a "Ng'anga". The Ng'anga plays a crucial role in guiding the dance and invoking the spirits to bring healing and blessings to the participant. The Ng'anga often undergoes to the rigorous training and initial ceremonies to acquire the necessary knowledge and spiritual powers to carry out the Vimbuza dance effectively. The Tumbuka people hold the Vimbuza dance in high regard and observe certain ritual and taboos associated with its performance. For example, women who are pregnant or menstruating are forbidden from participating in the dance, as they are believed to carry impure energies that may disrupt spiritual balance of the ritual. The use of certain traditional herbs and potions is also an integral part of the Vimbuza dance, as they are believed to enhance its healing power and effectiveness.
CRITICISM TOWARDS THE VIMBUZA DANCE
Vimbuza dance is facing criticism and controversy from outside sources, particularly from Western Medical and Religious authorities. Some have denounced the dance as a form of superstition and have sought to discourage its practice. However, the Tumbuka people are continuing to uphold the Vimbuza dance as an essential part of their cultural identity and spiritual beliefs. Despite the challenges and criticism, the Tumbuka tribe is remaining steadfast in their commitment to preserving and practicing the Vimbuza dance as a vital component of their cultural and spiritual heritage.
